# Migration

Most upgrades are automated: you grab the [latest configuration files](https://api.octoperf.com/doc/on-premise-infra/download/), merge them with your existing ones and restart the stack, as described in [Upgrading Version](https://api.octoperf.com/doc/on-premise-infra/upgrade/). Some versions also require manual steps, before or after the upgrade. Each guide below lists what to do when you upgrade to that version.

**Before any upgrade, back up your data.**

If you skip several versions, read every guide between your current version and the target version, in order. For example, to upgrade from `17.0.x` to `18.0.0`, read [17.0.x to 17.1.0](https://api.octoperf.com/doc/on-premise-infra/migration/17.0.x-to-17.1.0/), then [17.1.x to 18.0.0](https://api.octoperf.com/doc/on-premise-infra/migration/17.1.x-to-18.0.0/).
