# Area Range Chart Report Item

Area range chart are most often used and generated by the [Insights table report item](https://api.octoperf.com/doc/analysis/edit-bench-report/report-items/insights/).

They are used to compare two metrics. For example the chart bellows compares the hit rate to the user load over time.
It helps to look for [hit rate inflexion points](https://api.octoperf.com/doc/analysis/tips/#inflexion-point):

## Configuration

This chart has two [metrics](https://api.octoperf.com/doc/analysis/edit-bench-report/performance-metrics/):

* A reference metrics (the first one),
* A comparison metric (the second one).

Several metrics are available, please report to the [Hit Metrics Availability](https://api.octoperf.com/doc/analysis/edit-bench-report/performance-metrics/#hit-metrics-availability) tables.

The configuration settings tab allows you to set:

| Rule | Description |
|----------------|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| Title | The chart title displayed in the [report items list](https://api.octoperf.com/doc/analysis/edit-bench-report/#items-list) or when [exporting the report](https://api.octoperf.com/doc/analysis/export-bench-report/). |
| Reference Type | The type of the reference metrics: **Histogram** for a dynamic value over time, **Summary** for an average constant value. |
| Range Type | The way both metrics are compared to each other: **Raw** for raw values (both metrics must have the same unit) or **Percentage** to compare metrics with different units |

For example the following chart is used to compare the evolution of the response time standard deviation over time to its average value:
